Going to a job interview can be extremely stressful, but there's one thing you shouldn't worry about - your makeup and outfit. With these professional tips from an HR expert, rest assured, I've got you covered! And here's a bonus: you can test out different looks before your interview using Facetune so you can experiment with various styles risk-free.

In-house interview makeup tips

Makeup for a job interview should serve as a confidence booster, enhancing your best features without overpowering them. However, it's not a necessity - if you're unused to wearing makeup, putting it on for the first time during a job interview might not be the best idea, as it could feel like a mask to you.

Some job interviews necessitate wearing professional makeup, particularly for representative roles such as flight attendants. In such cases, it would be best to check the requirements and practice in advance, rather than on the day of the interview. You could also visit a makeup store and seek professional makeup tips for interviews. Alternatively, try out different looks using Facetune's makeup photo editor, which allows you to experiment with various styles without the mess.

For a worry-free day, opt for durable makeup that won't smudge or require touch-ups during the day.

Interview makeup steps

  • Invest in your base- Having a clean canvas for your makeup is crucial. Start with a moisturizer to prepare the skin for makeup. Afterward, top it off with a base of your choice. This could be either a BB cream or a foundation, based on your personal preference.
  • Conceal any blemishes- A job interview is the ideal occasion to present your best self, so it's crucial to mask anything that makes you feel uneasy. After completing your base, conceal any dark circles or blemishes with a concealer or corrector.
  • Eyes on the prize- When applying eye makeup for a job interview, it's best to stick with what you know. If you're used to wearing eyeshadows, you can apply them, but try to keep it professional. Perhaps it won’t be the best day to recreate heavy makeup looks from the last Met Gala. Just stick to neutrals- beige and brown shades would compliment all skin colors. Complete the look with polished brows filled with an eyebrow pencil or gel. Use Facetune's Discover Feed to explore different eye makeup presets and find a professional look that suits you.
  • Focus on the lips- As you will be speaking extensively during the interview, your lips will likely be the focus. It's best to avoid extreme colors and instead opt for a neutral lipstick that won't smudge or leave marks on your teeth, which could potentially distract your interviewers. Try out different lip colors using Facetune’s lipstick tool to find the perfect shade for your interview look.
  • Don’t go overboard- Refrain from going too heavy on lashes and eyeliner if you choose to use them and overall going for extreme looks. Yes, it is essential for people to know you as you truly are, but afford them the opportunity to judge the book not solely based on its cover.
  • Don’t forget about your hair- Your hair should complement your makeup look, not clash with it. Ensure it matches the style and maintains a tidy appearance. Avoid styling it in uncomfortable updos, such as extremely tight ponytails, which may cause discomfort and pain during the interview. Experiment with different hairstyles using Facetune's hairstyle simulator, which allows you to try various styles, cuts, and colors without the commitment.

What to wear? Job interview outfits

It may seem amusing, but my most significant piece of advice would be to opt for comfortable outfits made of breathable fabric that doesn't crease. Regardless of how stunning the outfit might be, it's probably not the best idea to arrive at an interview smelling less than fresh.

As a general rule, I typically advise individuals to stay true to themselves, yet also align with the company's norms. Observe what employees are wearing on the company's social platforms and aim to dress one level above. For instance, if it is common to wear t-shirts and shorts, opt for a polo shirt and jeans for the interview. If polo shirts are commonplace, then consider wearing a button-up shirt, and so on.

You can use Facetune's Clothes feature to virtually try on different clothing options. This allows you to experiment with various styles, colors, and combinations to find the perfect interview outfit without the need to purchase new clothes.

Makeup for virtual interviews

In today's world, with many positions being performed remotely, it is crucial to be prepared for online interviews, but don’t worry- I got you covered with the best makeup tips for a video interview.

Start with sunscreen

As amusing as it may seem, a computer screen emits a significant amount of radiation that can be harmful to the skin, potentially causing pigmentation issues and wrinkles. Therefore, even while at home, it's crucial to start your makeup routine with sunscreen.

Frame your face

Since computer cameras don't always have the best resolution, they can often wash out your features. Therefore, it's important to accentuate the highest points of your face - your brows, cheeks, and lips. Other features might appear less prominent on camera. Use Facetune's Makeup Editor to enhance these features and see how they look on camera before your interview.

Conceal the deal

As cameras can create shadows on your face, it is recommended to highlight your features to prevent the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Use a light concealer under the eye—it can even be one shade lighter than the one you typically use. This will create a lifted look, and the exact shade won't be noticeable on camera.

Bring color to your face

As the camera and concealer may wash you out it is time to bring back your face to life.

Don't hesitate to be generous with your blush, introduce a subtle yet prominent color to your lips, and define your brows using an eyebrow pencil.

It’s all about the eye-liner

If you feel comfortable with wearing eyeliner it can add more dimension to the look. Add a neutral shade of eyeshadow and top it up with eyeliner and a touch of mascara.

Your background matters

Video interview background changed with Facetune
  • Choose a subtle background that doesn’t catch the eye and distracts the interviewer from you. If you choose to use your real background make sure it is tidy and pleasant to the eye.
  • Having said that, choosing a background that can spark a conversation can be a wonderful ice breaker. For instance, my Zoom background features the picturesque town in Germany where I was born. Not only does it provide a beautiful backdrop, but it invariably serves as a delightful ice-breaker every single time. You can use Facetune's Backdrop feature to test how different backdrops might look with your appearance. This can help you visualize how you'll look against various background colors or styles before choosing or setting up your actual Zoom background. It's a great way to ensure your chosen background compliments your outfit and overall appearance.
  • Choose a top that doesn’t clash with the background, opt for colors that compliment your makeup and skin tone. Ensure that you are fully dressed, including your lower half, in case you need to suddenly stand up during the interview if someone rings the doorbell, and so on. Use Facetune's Clothes feature to virtually try on different tops and see how they look against your chosen background.
  • Make sure that your hair contrasts with the background. Wearing it down usually looks best with a virtual background as an updo sometimes blends in with the background.

Final tips & tricks:

  • Don’t forget to do sound and camera checks beforehand, check also the lighting in the room and opt always for a natural light as it is the most complimenting.
  • Ensure that the camera is positioned to capture you at the correct angle. It's optimal to look straight ahead and not to the side.
  • Ensure that you maintain the correct height in relation to your camera, as it can influence your body language. Improper alignment might make you appear insecure or slouchy.

Above all, never forget - when attending job interviews, confidence is the best accessory you can bring with you. Come prepared and confident, and you are already halfway accepted into the role. And remember, Facetune is a great tool to help you experiment and feel more prepared, but the most important thing is to be yourself and let your true personality shine through.
