Whether it comes to your Insta or Tinder account - you’re gonna need a good selfie. Knowing some photo-op techniques (and using the Facetune app;) can help, of course, but your first step is getting a great smartphone selfie camera. Alas, even with the best of phones, not all cameras are created equal. To help you navigate the murky waters of snapshot technology we’ve compiled a list (in no particular order) of the most popular smartphone selfies cameras out there, and get you on the road to viral Insta hearts ♥ the way Selena Gomez does it.
But before we begin, if you are low-key not even sure what some of the tech spec camera jargon means, MPs (or megapixels) are all you really need to know for right now. This is basically how much detail your phone’s sensor can pick up - the higher the pixel the more detail, and potentially a better photo. This isn’t the only measure of quality, and there are exceptions, but it’s a start - so let’s get this bread!
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra - S21 - This top dollar phone is arguably one of the best smartphones on the market (simmer down iPhone users), and this quality extends to the device’s unmatched selfie camera. With a 40 megapixel (MP) count, this handheld has few rivals on the market and can take some seriously high-resolution shots. The rear camera isn’t too shabby either with a quad lens setup (4 camera sensors), 108MP for the main lens, and 100x zoom capability. Word on the street is you can get some pretty high-quality vids with the selfie camera as well.
In terms of the slightly newer S21 version, there aren’t a ton of hardware upgrades, but there are a bunch of new software tricks, including a “wide” software mode. With an awesome front-facing camera and a bunch of upgrades in design and performance, you’ll be in selfie heaven.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro/ iPhone 12 Pro Max - Another top quality phone, with a top-quality selfie camera, of course. Arianna Grande would know as a long-time fan of the latest in Apple phones, and a master selfie taker. Now it may not sound impressive (and a little sus) with only 12MP, but this phone has something called a depth sensor allowing for brilliant portraits, and night mode which helps when you’ve got that gas station bathroom light going on. Not only that but the phone is loaded with other high-tech features including smart HDR 3 and deep fusion, which help to bring out the details in your images. There’s also Dolby Vision which means you can shoot a totally profesh TikTok video with the selfie camera!
Moto G 5G - If you are looking for affordable, but can’t sacrifice camera quality, look no further than this one. The device itself may lack some other expensive features, and the camera isn’t the absolute best, BUT, with dual-lens and 16MP, it’s dec for the price. And with an 8MP ultra-wide lens it’s also useful for group selfies that everyone looks hot in.
OnePlus Nord - It isn’t the best phone by this brand, but it is the best one for selfies. With a 32MP main sensor and 8MP for a wide one, it’s also a super affordable option for a 5G phone.
Oppo Find X2 - Huh what? Strange phone who dis. The Oppo is a lesser-known phone with a 32mp front-facing camera - a majorly high megapixel count that looks great even when they are viewed in a larger format. It has a triple-lens camera (6.7 in 1440 x 3168 AMOLED screen) and high-end power.
With new phones on the market all the time, this list is by no means exhaustive, there are many other great options. Google Pixel, for instance, is considered by some to be THE camera phone and be sure to check out @kingkhieu’s Tiktok video for some of the phones we’ve mentioned here, and some we haven’t!
And now, you’re ready for your close-up.
